Kara – “In the remote parts of our villages and cities in Africa we carry forward the cause of the Gospel, putting ourselves at the service of the poor and the marginalised”: Fides was told by Ivorian priest Donald Zagore a missionary of the Society of African Missions . Founded 8 December in 1856 in Lyons in France by Bishop Marion De Bresillac, the Society of African Missions prepares to celebrate 162 years of service facing challenges of all kinds, climatic, political, cultural, as well as linguistic and religious barriers.
“With schools, dispensaries, pharmacists, schooling, rehabilitation of former prison inmates, street children we SMA fathers strive to render the Good News of Christ a tangible reality for the poor in Africa” the missionary says.
And recalls: “We are called to offer hope to the poor. Christ says in his Gospel: ‘“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord". The poorest of the poor were at the centre of the mission of Christ. Jesus was for them a great source of hope”.
